Prevented Ocean Plastic (POP) is known for its positive environmental impacts: reducing plastic pollution in the oceans and contributing to a circular economy. But did you know how much other value the POPs program provides to our communities? In this article, we show how POP creates steady income and jobs for coastal families and encourages small businesses to thrive.

Contribution to livelihoods

The Prevented Ocean Plastic Program helps tens of thousands of people around the world to earn a living. Each day, the POP program sends more than $100,000 to pay bottle collectors to work for their manufacturers. The often disadvantaged collectors collect discarded plastic bottles from beaches and coastal areas at risk of plastic pollution. In return for their hard work, they receive a fair and stable salary.

Steady, stable income
The lives of families living in poverty are directly affected by bottle collection and participation in the recycling process on beaches. This is particularly important in developing coastal communities where there are few or no social safety nets to provide food and security for families.

Promoting sustainable jobs

By earning a steady income from their work, bottle collectors can buy bigger and bigger collection bags, or invest in a flatbed truck. In this way they can increase their efficiency: they can ensure an organised operation and increase the amount of plastic waste that can be collected.

More organised working

Coastal families can then set up their own collection points, recycling their income to increase productivity. This milestone will also mean progress and growth for individuals, providing a dedicated place to collect and sort plastic bottles.

The birth of small businesses

By creating more collection points, bottle collectors can further expand their activities. They can invest in machinery and equipment to become factory-scale recyclers. This development will not only create more jobs in their communities, but will also allow them to process more plastic waste.

In summary, the POPs programme has a valuable impact on coastal communities: it provides a stable income for individuals and, in the long term, helps small businesses based on bottle collection to develop and flourish.
