Summer is here, the favourite season for many of us. But one factor can still spoil those cosy summer evenings: the presence of mosquitoes. These bloodsuckers are not only a nuisance, they can also spread a number of diseases. Although chemical, chemical-based mosquito repellents can quickly and effectively reduce their numbers, they can also have a detrimental effect on the environment and human health. We've brought you some natural, homemade mosquito killer ideas on how to get rid of mosquitoes without harming your health and the environment.

Essential oils and plants

The use of natural mosquito repellents is not only effective but also an environmentally friendly way to control mosquitoes. Essential oils such as lemongrass and lavender are renowned for their mosquito repellent properties, while also adding a pleasant fragrance to our environment. These oils can easily be used either as a vaporizer or diluted in a bowl.

But these plants , planted in your garden or on your balcony, can also actively help to keep mosquitoes away. What's more, both plants are easy to keep alive! To be on the safe side, order reNEW nutrient concentrate.

If you are looking for a natural mosquito repellent that can be sprayed on the skin

There is a simple and effective solution to keep mosquitoes away naturally. The recipe below makes it easy to make your own natural mosquito repellent spray.

All you need is:

  • Almaecet
  • Water
  • 5-5 drops of essential oils of lemongrass, lavender and citronella

It's also easy to make: fill a spray bottle half full of water and half full of apple cider vinegar. Then add the blend of essential oils of your choice and shake well. You've got your own natural insect repellent!

It is important to shake the spray well before use to ensure that the ingredients are evenly mixed! Do not spray directly onto wounds, eyes or mouth. Also, do not use on children under 3 years of age. Keep the mixture out of sunlight and use within 6 months at the most.

Before using any ingredient, check the possible side effects! If you are unsure about its use, consult a professional. For sensitive skin or other skin problems, always seek medical advice before using any new product on your skin, whether homemade or commercially available.

Vinegar against mosquitoes too?

One of the ingredients in homemade mosquito traps is none other than vinegar. As well as being an effective cleaning agent, vinegar is also an excellent natural mosquito repellent. The acidic pH of vinegar and its strong odour make it an effective mosquito repellent. Pour a 1:3 ratio of vinegar and water into a bowl, place it in the area where you want to spend time without mosquitoes and let the mixture have the desired effect. But spraying the water and vinegar mix into the air is also a good solution. Also, it's good to know that diluted vinegar can also relieve mosquito bites!

What else scares mosquitoes away?

Animals: birds, frogs, fish and other aquatic creatures play a major role in mosquito control. They naturally control mosquito populations, contributing to the balance of the local ecosystem without the need for harmful chemicals. It is therefore important to protect the natural habitats of these animals, including forests, meadows, wetlands and other natural areas.

Prevent the mosquito invasion

Mosquitoes breed mainly in stagnant water, such as puddles, reservoirs or neglected garden ponds. It is therefore essential to check your drainage systems regularly and avoid stagnant water in them. Frequent checking and cleaning of rainwater catchments, garden sprinkler systems and other water catchment devices can help reduce the number of mosquitoes in our environment. This also includes emptying the bottom of flower pots, regular maintenance of drains and unblocking drains. All this can help to minimise mosquito breeding in standing water.

These environmentally and health-friendly methods are effective in reducing the number of mosquitoes in our environment, but they also preserve the balance of nature and protect our health. Try the methods listed here and enjoy a mosquito-free summer!
