The surveys are based onn, in theory, we Hungarians have the willingness to select the mostour rubbish, but there is still room for improvement. Sometimes we don't know exactly which bin is the right place for a particular waste, so the following post aims to put things right.
What options do we have?
In addition to communal waste bins, there are also selective waste bins placed at the home, or so-called door-to-door collection. You can also take your sorted waste to a selective collection islandkto vor to waste yards, awareness and re-use centres.
Recycling is the essence of selective waste collection. It ensures that the raw materials and energy used to make our objects are not wasted. Because recycling different materials less energy is neededthan it takes to extract, transport and process the raw materials needed to make new products. By recycling waste reduce soil and air pollutionbecause waste does not end up in landfills, where it then poisons the environment through various fermentation processes. Recycling is a collective effort that we can all make to help protect our planet.
What is the CYCLE-for example, we recycle wastewater and use it to make detergents. At the same time, the packaging of our products is made from recycled plastic.
Four types of waste can be collected directly from households: paper, metal, plastic and drinks cartons.
What can go in the blue tank?
The container with the blue lid ispaper-based wastecollection point. So this is where newspapers, notebooks, envelopes, books, corrugated papers, wrapping papers and cardboard boxes can go. Boxes and cartons should be flattened before throwing them away to minimise the space they take up. Only clean paper waste can be collected in blue-lidded containers. Beverage cartonscan(juice, milk cartons) should be collected in the yellow-lidded bins and washed out from January 2022!
Tilos: Do not throw any paper containing food residues or other oily, greasy, solvent-containing contaminants into the container, including used tissues, wipes and napkins. It is also forbidden to throw indigo paper, fax paper, nappies and used sanitary towels in this bin!
What is the yellow lidded bin for?
The yellow bin is for plastic-based waste, i.e. PET bottles for soft drinks and mineral water, household bottles, cosmetics bottles and twisted caps, and clear plastic film and bags. But also milk, cream, yoghurt and yoghurt cups, which areint, as mentioned above, beverage cartons. It is important to wash everything before throwing it away, and plastic bottles should be squeezed out and put in the bin.
For door-to-door selective collection, metal-based waste is also placed in the yellow lidded bin with plastic-based waste. In other words, the various types of household metal waste (e.g.l metal caps) and metal drinks cans should be collected here. For door-to-door selective collection, metal and plastic waste are separated afterwards.
You can throw these types of plastic in the yellow bin:
- PET: code 1
- HDPE: code 2
- LDPE: code 4
- PP: code 5
Plastics marked with codes 1, 2, 4 and 5 can be recycled and thrown away in the yellow bin, but plastics marked 3, 6 and 7 should only be dumped in municipal waste yards. These codes are usually found at the bottom of the bottles.
Tilos: You should not put any greasy, oily, household chemical-contaminated bottles or margarine cans in the yellow bin, or any plastic containing food residues. It is also forbidden to put toothbrushes, plastic toys, nylon stockings, CDs, cassette tapes and video cassettes in the bin. Metal waste must be rinsed and clean, as must bottles.
What are the grey, green and white collectors for?
A in grey metal-based waste, except for door-to-door selective collection, in which case it will be placed in the yellow lidded bin with the plastics.
In green are the coloured bottles (wine and beer bottles). It is important that the caps must be unscrewed!
A white collector you can throw white bottles (jars, mineral water bottles, short-drink bottles) into the white bin, of course without lids or caps.
Tilos: You cannot throw ceramics, neon tubes, window glass, mirrors, light bulbs, eyeglasses, china or medicine bottles in the containers for bottles (or any other containers).
Styrofoam should not be disposed of in municipal waste bins, or in the recycling bin, as recycling has not yet been solved. Like hazardous waste, they should be disposed of in the yards!
What is municipal waste and what should not be thrown in the municipal waste bin?
Many people think that they can throw anything in these bins, but this is not the case at all. Recyclable waste (paper, plastic and metal) cannot be placed in the communal bins for mixed waste collection, nor can liquid, toxic, flammable and explosive materials, construction and demolition waste, rubbish, animal carcasses, electrical and electronic waste. In some places, green garden waste is also prohibited. Municipal waste is collected in dark green and dark grey bins.
What can we take to the yards?
Anyone can drop off their separately collected waste at the yards, which only accept uncontaminated waste sorted by type. There are currently 17 collection yards in Budapest.
Can be dropped off at any waste yard:
Paper: newspapers, books, wrapping paper, cardboard, corrugated paper

metal packaging waste: beverage and beer cans and cans
coloured glass: bottles for wine, beer and champagne (only bottles with flasks)
white glass: beverage, jar and perfume bottles (only flasks)
styrofoam: only completely clean, white packaging styrofoam
protective packaging for technical articles
