In a landmark move , the European Union is introducing new rules against green-painting and for more transparent environmental labelling.
The directive, drafted by the European Parliament , aims to protect consumers from misleading marketing practices and to increase the transparency of environmentally friendly products.
Dealing with deceptive practices
Didier Reynders, the European Commission's Justice Commissioner, stressed the need for stricter regulation because of the increasing number of environmentally unfriendly but misleading labels on the market.
The Directive requires manufacturers and distributors to justify claims on labels.
With transparent labelling and accurate information, the initiative will ensure that consumers can be sure they are buying what is on the label.
Checking the eco-labels
The EU gives public authorities the task of verifying sustainability labels.
They also want to strengthen the reliability of labels and prevent companies from misrepresenting their environmental credentials and awareness.
The EU hopes that the measures will help to ensure that consumers have access to more comprehensive and credible information and that demand for genuinely environmentally friendly products increases.
We also commented on the legislation at home
Edina Tóth, Fidesz MEP and rapporteur of the EP's Environment Committee, agrees with the legislation.
He stressed that the phenomenon of painting green has been gaining ground recently, which is why it is particularly important to fight it.
He said the legislation would effectively ban products and services that are misleadingly painted green.
Key points of the new directive:
-
Adjectives such as "environmentally friendly", "natural", "biodegradable", etc., should not be used on labels without evidence
-
only labels supported by officially approved certification schemes are allowed in the EU
-
warranty information must be clearly visible on the labels
-
claims about the durability of the product or encouraging its replacement must be substantiated
The victory of truly green initiatives
The new directive is a decisive step towards curbing green-painting practices and promoting credible sustainability actions.
The EU aims to create a market where consumers can confidently choose products that match their value by holding companies accountable for their environmental claims.
The Directive will have to be approved by the European Council, after which it will be formally published and Member States will have 24 months to put it into practice.
Transparency is also a priority for CYCLE
Since the beginning, we have strived to be transparent in every aspect of our cleaning products and operations.
We believe it is important that consumers are not confused in this area and can easily find their way around the environmentally friendly options. To do this, it is essential that all green products communicate themselves transparently and comply with the regulations.
Our work also draws attention to the fact that how common the phenomenon of painting green isand how we can deal with the challenges it presents.
We are committed to the subject, so we also participate in conferences and eventsto keep up to date and effectively apply the principles of transparency in our work.
If you want to support transparent and truly eco-friendly cleaning products, buy CYCLE!
